Additional Top Tip: As things get more automated - use "keywords" in the CV! Software can now scan and sift CV's, pulling out the CV's that contian key words: e.g. If you are hiring someone with good HTML as a skill - it can delete any CV's that do not have the words "HTML" on the Cv!

Get your skills on the paper at the end in a list to make sure you are not auto deleted!

What a great post.
You offer perspective and hope. You honesty is so refreshing.
When unexpected change of this sort comes our way, it is a great opportunity to step back and assess where we are at, and where we were going.
Is there a better path? A better choice? Take some time out to think about where
you want to be and what is important to you.
:)
Good luck to all.

Rebecca,

An excellent and timely observation on what happens when your world stops.

When mine happened, it took ~3 months to decided to reinvent myself and moved from the hi-tech environment where I invested 45 years. I spent a full year (really) trying to find a position in education (I have a PhD). Perseverance paid off and I now have adjunct instructor positions with two universities and now teaching three classes a week. I should have made this move much sooner, I am having a GREAT time!

As bleak as it seems that first month, stop and think; "Would the worst thing they could have done would be to keep me?" Sometimes a radical change is beneficial

Hello dearjane and readers,
This is a marvelously written piece with new tips, good info and ideas.
Can you advise single income, mature workers who have been scraping by on Unemployment Benefits (extensions about to run out) and are also networking and attending workshops and volunteering ---how do we obtain the Image Makeover and Recruiter tips you mention --- on a sliding scale or free? $1600/month does not go far.
Thank you for your diligence,
Lisa W
